Gwinnett County Driver Information
License Plates
Georgia tags must be purchased within 30 days after establishing residency. You will need the following:
1. Georgia driver’s license;
2. Title of car, name and address of lienholder, or copy of lease agreement (Title is required for 1986 or newer vehicles);
3. Current tag registration;
4. Mileage reading of vehicle;
5. Valid insurance card. Liability coverage insurance is required by Georgia law and an insurance identification card must be in your possession when you drive;
6. Proof of Georgia Residency (such as a lease or deed);
7. $20 for your tag plus $18 for your title (if required). Drivers may also have to pay an ad valorem tax (property tax) at the time the license tag is issued;

Driver’s License
New Georgia residents have 30 days to obtain a Georgia driver’s license. You will need the following:
1. Valid out-of-state license;
2. One document from Category A and one from Category C;
3. Pass an eye test;
4. Non-US Citizens must present a VALID INS Document or be represented by an Authorized Refugee Re-settlement Agency (with proper forms and INS Documents).;
5. $15 fee IN CASH
Requirements are different for drivers under 18, or if your license has been lost, stolen, revoked or suspended. See the Dept. of Motor Vehicle Safety Web site for more information.

Emissions Certificate
Vehicle emission inspections are now required every year. All covered vehicles (1977-1998), even AND odd model years, will require emission testing in 2001.
Change in Vehicle Exemptions:
The 3 most recent model years are exempt each year. In 2001, all 1999 and newer model year vehicles are exempt from emission testing. Additionally, vehicles 25 model years or older are now exempt. In 2001, this includes vehicles 1976 or older.
